A Paradise for Visitors
Frequently referred to as the “Riviera of the Bronx,” Orchard Beach impresses with its beauty and is a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. A Rich History of the Area
Pelham Bay Park was established in 1888. Since then, the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has consistently worked to develop the area. Public bathhouses were constructed in a short time and soon became the resort’s hallmark. Initially, Orchard Beach’s area was small and couldn’t compete with other New York beaches. In 1905, the beach was expanded by 400 feet, and new amenities and services were introduced. By 1912, weekday summer attendance reached 2,000 visitors, while weekends saw up to 5,000 guests.
The site achieved its modern scale largely due to the efforts of renowned urban planner Robert Moses. Appointed as the city’s parks commissioner in 1934, Moses quickly recognized the potential of the beach area. During his first year in office, he devised a modernized reconstruction plan for the resort, aiming to create a popular leisure spot and key tourist attraction. His vision became a reality. Thanks to his work and the expansion of the shoreline, the beach acquired its recognizable crescent shape.
The revamped resort opened on June 25, 1937, and quickly gained the affection of local residents. Families and groups of friends flocked here for relaxation, a tradition that has endured over the years.
